    The Richmond County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting on Central Avenue. The incident happened on the 2000 block.According to the Sheriff's Office, a 25 year old man was shot twice: once in the abdomen and once in the right knee. Officials say that the victim was transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries. No suspects have been named at this time.

    The South Carolina Ports Authority saw an 8 percent growth in container volume during the fiscal year that ended June 30th. The authority said Monday that the equivalent of more than 1.6 million 20-foot containers moved through the Port of Charleston. That's about 2 percent more than expected. The June figure was up 19 percent from last year. The ports also handled more than 760,000 tons of cargo not shipped in containers.     Washington, GA Police Dept. Voted Out, Sheriff's Office Takes Over

    There was controversy in Washington, Georgia surrounding the proposal to disband the city's police department and absorb it into the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office. The motion did pass and citizens in Washington say they are far from happy. The City Council meeting was very heated, but Mayor Ames Barnett assured the group it was a tough decision and the city would still have protection.

    Police are looking for two suspects who drove to the Costco Wholesale store on Riverwatch Parkway around 7:40 p.m. and stole jewelry. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the suspects performed a smash and grab and then fled the store in a white Buick Regal with North Carolina tags BHK8000. Police identified the suspects as two black men wearing orange and yellow, a white and white shirt. One man was heavyset.

This week, though, Governor Nathan Deal met with a British drug manufacturer to talk about the possibility of trials with a marijuana-based drug. The drug would help treat children with seizures, and would be conducted at Children's Hospital of Georgia.

It was intended to help end racial discrimination, but how far have we come here at home in a half century? Pain College Historian Mallory Millender put it this way: We’ve made tremendous progress, but great disparities remain.
